Healthy Habits Series: To dairy or not to dairy?

A very controversial subject. We’re here to pass on the facts.

Mojoi Vegan (dairy free) Nutty Sundried Tomato Tapenade.

Considered an animal rights issue by many, it has been the core of many heated debates between nutritionists and different health professionals for many years. Overwhelming much? Yes, we think so too. But have no fear foodies! Mojoi is here to report the facts in order to empower you to make conscious and more health oriented decisions when it comes to all things nutrition. After all, we are what we eat!  Unquestionably, calcium plays a huge role in our nutritional needs making it the most prominent mineral in our bodies. That’s right! there’s more calcium in our bodies more than any other mineral. Our teeth, bones, heart, muscles and even nervous system thrive because of it. The recommended daily intake (RDI) of calcium is 1,000 mg per day for most adults, though women over 50 and everyone over 70 should get 1,200 mg per day, while children aged 4–18 are advised to consume 1,300 mg. However, most healthcare professionals agree that most of us do not get enough calcium a day.

So here it comes, the center argument for this particular topic… If western society consumes so much dairy, one could argue that we should be calcium champs. Well that’s simply not the case, but why? For as long as we can recall, we have been spoon fed the belief that the main foods rich in calcium are dairy products like milk, cheese and yogurt. Yet, many non-dairy sources are also high in this mineral. All these facts bring us to ask the question: does milk really do the body good? We decided to do some digging and uncovered some hard facts. Dairy is highly acidic. When we drink milk, our body’s response to the increased acid intake consists of releasing minerals — such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium, which are all necessary for strong bones into our bloodstream to bring us back to a pH homeostasis. This means that we may actually be losing more calcium than we are consuming when eating or drinking dairy products. Ouch! Many people have cut dairy completely and have amazing results and a great shift in their overall state of health.

Making the decision to go dairy free is a big one. We understand the shift can leave you craving that glass of milk with cookies or even your afternoon granola bowl with yogurt. Mojoi believes moderation is the key to everything. Thankfully we live in a world full of choices and therefore, plant-based substitutes for most dairy products. A great way to start is taking things one step at time. We invite you to check out the whole foods aisle or organic section during your next trip to your favorite supermarket and give one these great products a try, you might be pleasantly surprised. We also invite you to give our delicious MOJOI TO GO vegan spreads, dips, and sauces a go! another dairy free alternative to satisfy your munchies. Stay informed and healthy foodies!
